Can it be? Is it true? Well not exactly, but there are some signs leading many to believe the super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr that the sports world has been clamoring for, could be in the works. There are several reasons behind this thinking.
Right after the Kentucky Derby …… oops, I meant Pacquiao-Mosley fight in Las Vegas on May 7, it was announced that Pacquiao would face off with Juan Manuel Marquez for a third time on November 12, to finally settle the score between the two combatants. It is because of the 2 dramatically close fights, the first a draw and the second a split decision win for Pacquiao, that warrants a third and deciding fight. Marquez claims to have beaten Pacquiao twice and Pacquiao`s trainer Freddy Roach has said for years that he would love to finally shut Marquez up.
Take note, Pacquiao (53-3-2 38 KO`s) fought Marquez in May of 2004 and March of 2008. Going back to the Hatton fight in May of 2009, Pacquiao has fought in either May or March and also in every November over the past 3 yrs. After Hatton it was Cotto in November of 2009. Clottey was March of `10 and Margarito was Nov of `10. Mosley was in May of this year and now he`ll fight with Marquez again in November.
If you equate in the fact that Marquez is a counter puncher like Mayweather, then Maybe Top Rank knows something they are not telling us. Who`s to say Manny isn’t using the Marquez fight to ready himself more for the counterpunching style he would face from Mayweather?
Now Mayweather (41-0 25 KO`s) as we all know, has just signed to fight WBC champ Victor Ortiz. Ortiz is a Power punching, aggressive southpaw. Remind you of anyone we`ve been talking about? Also, looking back on Little Floyd`s fight resume it seems as if he has a particular fight pattern since (you guessed it) 2009. After a 21 month layoff, in September of 2009 Mayweather fought and defeated Juan Manuel Marquez in a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision. In May of 2010 Mayweather fought and beat Sugar “Shame” Mosley in a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision. Now after another year plus layoff Mayweather is fighting once again in what month people? Of course, September!
Its all adding up now isn’t it? Pacquiao has fought in May 2 of the last 3 years and Mayweather`s biggest fights for some reason happen in May also. Last year was Mosley and in 2005 it was Oscar De La Hoya. If we look at next years calendar, I`d say Pacquiao – Mayweather could actually happen on May 5, 2012, yup Cinco De Mayo! Like I said, nothing is certain, but as long as they both come away with victories in September and November, then the signs are sure pointing in the direction.
